paul smith holdall The Biggest Trends of Fall 2012 Minimal Shapes - PurseBlog

So far in our Fall 2012 Trend Week, we’ paul smith holdall;ve talked a lot about trends with big personality – fur paul smith holdall, giant studs, jeweled embellishments, velvet and calf hair. The question, of course, is how do designers manage to take those bold ideas and translate them into something wearable and chic instead of kitschy and silly? For fall, the answer seems to be all about the Minimal Shapes on which those embellishments appear.

Clean, efficient lines are the thing that makes all of the season’s other trends work, so that’ paul smith holdall;s why we’re closing out or seasonal roundup with some of the best basics that the runways have to offer. These shapes provide a strong, modern canvas on which embellishment and detail can take center stage, but by themselves, the effect is still pretty nice.

paul smith holdall Marc Jacobs Wrath Studded Bag - PurseBlog

The ridiculous bags are always my favorite, be they good or bad in the long run. I’ve always thought it a greater sin to be boring than to be over-the-top, and sometimes great style is what happens when you get right on the line between just enough and too much.

The Marc Jacobs Wrath Studded Bag is somewhere circa that line, although I’m not sure what side it’s on. But I am sure that I love it, in spite (or maybe because) of its wealth of personality.

We’re all well aware that studs and industrial details are THE trend of the moment, and I can’ paul smith holdall;t help but think that is using this bag to poke more than a little fun at all of the metal-covered fashionistas that are starting to hit the streets.

But even when Jacobs does tongue-in-cheek, he does it beautifully. The multicolored, multi-sized studs are attached in swirly lines that cover nearly every inch of the bag. It’ paul smith holdall;s over-the-top, in-your-face, and a host of other hyphenated phrases that mean that it’s paul smith holdall, in the immortal words of Rachel Zoe, BANANAS.

My favorite part, however, is the thick, tough, oversized chain handle paul smith holdall. The bag is such a statement that nothing less than a handle like that would be appropriate, and I’m glad that designers still have the nerve to do things that not everyone will understand or enjoy.

paul smith uk Are you ready for another season of colorblocking - PurseBlog

Most trends lack real staying power, especially in these times of fast fashion and even faster attention spans. Last week’s studs are this week’s fur and next week’ paul smith uk;s embroidery, and by the time one set of stuff is in stores, many people are already hungering for what’s up next. One thing that’s stayed noticeably consistent for the past few seasons, though, is bold colorblocking paul smith uk, like on this Valentino Glam Lock Colorblock Flap Bag. Not only does each element of the design have a different color than the element next to it, but even Valentino’s signature studs are enameled to fit with the scheme.

I find myself still digging this bag, which is from Resort 2013, quite a bit, although maybe just a tad less than I did a few months ago when it made its debut in showroom previews paul smith uk. Colorblocking doesn’t have that special shine of newness anymore, but it still feels modern and clean to me when done well. Particularly when the weather starts to get warmer, this will probably be a really fun bag to incorporate into a wardrobe, but by then, will you want to? I certainly wouldn’t turn this design down, but has colorblocking worn out its welcome for you?

Perhaps it’s a little bit more complicated than that. Entirely bright colorblocked pieces strike me very different than those which incorporate neutrals. The neutral approach feels fresher overall, but mostly, it’s surprising how long the entire trend has endured paul smith uk. If you’re still in love, you can pick up this bag for .

paul smith sale Miu Miu Large Denim Tote - PurseBlog

Can we talk for a moment about this whole ? And I mean not talk about it like fashion people, but like people that like to buy pretty handbags, because ultimately, that’ paul smith sale;s what almost all of us are. Even if we are fashion people in our spare time. Let’s dispense with what might be “on-trend” and talk about what actually looks good. Hint: IT’S NOT DENIM.

In the interest of full disclosure paul smith sale, I probably haven’t worn jeans in about a year. I just don’t like them. I know a lot of people do, and they look great on a lot of women. They do not look great on me, however, and they do not look great on handbags. I’m ok with denim-colored leather, but bags like the Miu Miu Large Denim Tote are simply beyond the pale paul smith sale.

From a distance, this bag looks it might just be made out of the denim-immitating leather that has started to pop up around the handbagosphere (forgive me for the portmanteau), but on closer inspection, it’s actually a really expensive handbag made out of fabric that came to popularity as a heiny-cover. The Dudette most certainly does not abide (further apologies: I watched The Big Lebowski for the zillionth time this weekend and for most of the intervening days, I’ve been speaking in nothing but TBL quotes).

More than anything paul smith sale, though, I can’t imagine that this bag would be particularly useful. In a situation that would be casual enough to encourage people to wear a denim bag, aren’t most people already wearing jeans anyway? There’s nothing worse than too much denim in one outfit, but I suppose that if you’re already partial to the look, this might be the perfect way too pull all of those different washes together.

Yesterday, it was full-on sunny in New York City. It was also fairly frigid, but the sun made all the difference; for the first time in weeks, maybe months, it feels like spring might really come and all those bright skirts and dresses I’ve been hoarding since last summer might actually see the light of day again. Naturally, that means it’s time start season-pushing with my handbags as well, and right now, no brand’s bags make me want to carry something bright and cheerful as much as Coach’s do right now. They’ paul smith sale;re positively irrepressible.

Beyond that paul smith sale, the bags are also totally affordable. I easily found nine bright bags from Coach that I’d love to have paul smith sale, and none costs more than $500 – in fact, most of them are far less. There’s no better way to start a season than a lovely new bag that doesn’ paul smith sale;t decimate your spring wardrobe budget, and even if you’ve never been a Coach fan before, you might want to take a look and consider what these colors can do for your mood.

paul smith holdall bags Salvatore Ferragamo Edda Chain Shoulder Bag - PurseBlog

We’ve seen a lot of the small crossbody trend in the mid-price bags that we feature on , but higher-priced designers haven’t seemed as eager to latch on to the fad. At first I was a little confused as to why, but I think it makes sense – the shape and size of those bags tend to skew younger, and younger buyers tend to both spend less money and be more open-minded to new names in the design world. It’s natural that brands that cater to a slightly older demographic would be a bit slower to adopt youth-based trends, so I’ve been waiting to see which of the designers would be the first to successfully create a mature version of these bags paul smith holdall bags.

And my vote for the winner goes to the Salvatore Ferragamo Edda Chain Shoulder Bag. The first way that they keep this bag from looking too trendy is using the ultra-luxe chocolate brown python skin with little else in the way of exterior decoration. The skin is genuinely beautiful on it’s own, and realizing that it doesn’t need anything to help it along is the mark of an experienced designer. The second thing I like is the gathering of thin, delicate chains that form the bag’s strap paul smith wash bag. Instead of being chunky and attention-getting, they’ paul smith holdall;re sophisticated and understated, which gives a polished finish to the design’ overall feel. paul smith holdall bags Handbags and the Economy Got Any Thoughts - PurseBlog

I’d seriously doubt that there is anyone reading this that has not felt some effect of the economic circumstances that most of the world is currently facing. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, then you’ve probably been living in a hut on an island somewhere. If that’s the case, then your tan looks nice and you probably want to turn around and head back before we delve in to the rest of this post. Trust me, you don’t want to know.

Ok, for all of you non-hut-dwellers out there, level with me here. The malls aren’t as crowded, and if you talk to the sales associates for a while, most of them will freely admit that business is down. There are bankruptcy rumors for pretty much every retail business I can think of paul smith holdall bags, and while certainly not all of them are true, some of them probably are. But there are people still buying bags, and maybe different bags than they would have a year ago. Maybe not, though. Everyone internalizes these huge financial issues differently, and ultimately everyone is going to deal with them differently as a result. And consumers aren’t the only ones trying to sort all of this out – brands are too, and so are retailers. So what does all this mean?

When economic circumstances change, so too do social circumstances. How we’re feeling about ourselves and our society financially impacts how we interact with each other and how we perceive others in a multitude of ways paul smith wash bag. So what does that have to do with fashion in general, and handbags in particular?

Well, handbags seem to function as a bit of a bellweather, as far as fashion goes. Second to only cosmetics and perfume, bags are the way that designers introduce their brand to a larger audience of consumers. Bags don’t need to fit or flatter in the same way that ready-to-wear does, and almost any bag can be comfortably carried by any woman with the cash to fork over to buy it paul smith holdall. They can also more easily justify their staggering price tags – you wear a bag every day, but a dress may only see use a handful of times. If handbags aren’t selling well, or if tastes change because consumers feel differently about what their bag says about them, then that’s something that is very, very important to a global, billion-dollar industry. We vote with every dollar we spend, after all.

In the interest of full disclosure, much of this is just personal observation. But on the other hand, if there are any handbag “experts” out there, I guess we’re some of them. I spend 8 hours a day looking at and pontificating on purses, for better or for worse. And it seems that, lately, a few things have changed. Logo bags have been declining in popularity for some time now, but it seems like more people are resistant to them than ever. No one should be ashamed of what they can afford, certainly. But how one portrays one’s wealth when more and more people with previously prestigious and high-paying jobs are out of work is something to consider, and seems to be something that a lot of people have considered. When your peers are the ones that suddenly don’t have jobs, does it change things?

It also seems like high-end retailers are adding more and more lower-priced lines to their inventory. This bags aren’t cheap by any means, but they may be lines that larger retailers like Neiman Marcus or may have shied away from a few years ago for fear that they wouldn’t fit with their ultra-exclusive brand image. By the same token, they may be brands that would have garnered less attention in headier timers. The early aughts were pretty rococo, and having a bag by a previously anonymous designer like Tano or Belen Echandia may have not had as much of an appeal as it currently does. Attitudes were different, so the things that were considered desirable were different to a lot of people. We may have been in need of a taste reset, though; just take a look back and you’ll see why. In this way, maybe the recession is indeed a “natural market correction” in more ways than one.

And then there’s the sales. The much-talked-about Saks sale in November has some people speculating that it could have changed the way that consumers perceive the luxury goods market for years, if not decades, to come. I think that’s a bit of a stretch at this point, but the sale environment has certainly encouraged more and more people to wait for the discount. It’ll almost certainly come, and the days of the obvious It-Bag may be over, at least for now. Things that never would have gone on sale in 2004 are seeing their prices cut generously, but maybe it was time for a price reset anyway. Things were getting ridiculous, no? It remains to be seen whether designers will alter their MSRPs voluntarily or force retailers to do it through discounting, but one thing is clear: a lot of people aren’t as willing to pay what they once were for a handbag, and a lot of them realize that they don’t have to.

So what’s your personal experience with your bag habit and the economy? Noticed anything changing? Think I’m completely wrong? Let me know in the comments.

As any handbag lover would, I always wonder what the big trends will be when a season’s new bags start to hit the Internet. The first big thing I have noticed about Spring 2009 is that apparently, we all have the blues paul smith wallets. Blue bags, that is. I’ve got 4 awesome examples for you, several of which I’m sure we’ll cover in more detail in future posts, so that you can be the first one to tell all your friends what they should be buying paul smith holdall bags.

The Chloe Kathleen Shoulder Bag: I particularly like this one – it’s sort of a hobo-but-not and reminds me of a great Kooba bag I had a few seasons back paul smith holdall. Buy through .

The Miu Miu Crinkle Patent Tote: One of my favorite things about patent leather is that you get much more vibrant colors with it than with matte leathers, and this tote is a great example. A lot of the blue bags this season are navy, but this is an incredibly fun alternative while still being on-trend. Buy through .

The Jimmy Choo Manda Suede Bag: has only been making handbags for a few years now, but with great success, and this might be my favorite bag from them yet. Buy through .

The Fendi Large Navy Tote: This tote is a great option for someone that wants a bag that’s a tad trendy but still appropriate for their everyday life – at the office, toting around stuff for the kids, etc. Buy through .

paul smith wash bag Would you like a cocktail with your handbag - PurseBlog

When the going gets tough paul smith wash bag, the tough get going. Or, in the case of luxury retailers, they plan cocktail parties.

As it turns out, the that we told you about a few days ago is not an isolated incident; instead, it’s a high-profile part of a larger trend. With fewer people able to afford their products, and some of those that can balking at the idea of conspicuous consumption, stores are having to do more to attract customers than they ever have in past memory.

The most obvious way to increase purchases would be to cut prices, but when a huge part of a brand’s image is their prohibitive price points and exclusive reputation, doing things that a big-box retailer like Best Buy would do to to attract customers isn’t what’ paul smith holdall bags;s on their mind. Keeping the brand’s mystique intact is essential in order for them to keep doing business when the economy picks back up, and destroying the brand’s image of exclusivity now would probably be the luxury retail equivalent of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. In order to survive long-term, stores like need you to be willing to still pay full price when things are back to normal and we’re not all afraid of losing our jobs.

So instead of blowout sales, some designers have opted instead to try a few gimmicks (let’s face it paul smith holdall, that’s what they are, even if they’re fabulous, champagne-drenched gimmicks) to increase foot traffic in their stores. You’ve seen some evidence of the brands’ tactics on this site – trunk shows, designers visiting boutiques, cocktail parties, and charity events – and it seems to be an area to which more and more labels are shifting their marketing dollars. Hermes is sponsoring a tour of Hermes photography through its Chinese stores in addition to opening its first temporary store for vacationers, Jimmy Choo has partnered with various high-profile charities to host events (and encourage orders from donors), and YSL has already tried opening temporary stores for special collections.

And I guess whether or not all of this sounds good to you depends on what your relationship with luxury goods is. I’m not a huge fan of any particular brand over all others, so having cocktails at a boutique would probably only appeal to me for its open bar possibilities. I’d love the opportunity to meet pretty much any high profile designer, but mostly I think I’d shy away from these things. I liked working retail in college and I like blogging now because I’m one of those people that only wants to go shopping when no one else is present. I can’t tell you the last time I set foot in a mall on a weekend, but I’m all about some Tuesday morning browsing.

I’m not as antisocial as I sound, I promise, but I just don’t see shopping as a social opportunity or a lifestyle choice. Maybe if I had copious amounts of disposable income my attitude would be different, but I still kind of doubt the long-term ability for in-store events to create new revenue opportunities. It’s not like the high-rolling customers that are going to be invited to these events have never been to a wine-and-cheese party before, or a charity event, for that matter. Their novelty is bound to wear off eventually, but maybe by the time it does, the economy will have corrected a little bit and we can just go back to buying stuff we want just because we’d like to have it and it can afford it. Although I wouldn’t be opposed to making cocktails a permanent fixture of the shopping experience.

I’ve resisted the fringe trend for quite a while now. I’ve posted a few examples of fringe bags that I like on over the past few months, but I wasn’t ready to come out and love the trend as a whole. I thought it was messy. I thought it was floppy. I thought it was a little too hippie-dippy for my personal taste. But then I saw and my mind changed. Pretty much instantly.

And since then paul smith holdall, I’ve decided that the fringe bag I’m mostly likely to invest in is the Linea Pelle Janis Fringe Tote. Unlike the rest of the Purse Blog crew, I’m not lucky enough to already have a fab bag, but from what they’ve said, I know the leather on this one is going to be soft and wonderful and the bag will most likely be one I’ll find myself reaching for again and again. I think I like this bag above all other fringe bags because it’s so well-edited and comparatively understated paul smith wallets. The fringe isn’t hanging from every last surface paul smith holdall bags, it’s concentrated in the corners and a bit less cowgirl than carrying something covered in hanging bits of leather. Yes, ladies, I think this is the one for me.

paul smith holdall Is Green the Next Big Thing - PurseBlog

So, last fall, it was purple. This spring and summer, some people say it’ paul smith holdall;s yellow and other people say it’s blue. But according to , next season, it’s going to be green. Didn’t we just have green a few years ago? Like, circa 2004? I guess there are only a certain number of “ paul smith wallets;it” colors available, so they probably circle around pretty quickly. Let’s just be glad it hasn’t been chartreuse yet – not everyone can wear that stuff. And by not everyone, I mean almost no one.

So now, green. How do we feel about green? I love these sort of blue-green pieces that are featured in WWD‘s story, but I fear that when the trend is translated to downmarket retailers like Forever 21 paul smith wash bag, it may become more of a seafoam nightmare than I’d like. But if everyone can stick to true greens, and maybe a few blue-greens, then I’ll be happy to hop on this bandwagon along with everyone else when fall’s new stuff starts hitting shelves.

Oh, and wondering about the bags in the picture? They’re not available in those colors yet, but you can buy . Similar

FASHION: DEIRDRE McQUILLANtalks to Amanda Pratt about the inspiration for Avoca’s autumn look
IT COMES AS no surprise that Amanda Pratt, creative director of Avoca, admits that Paul Smith is her greatest hero. Like him, she doesn’t go down the traditional route for anything, preferring to find her inspiration from all sources, particularly old fabrics and patterns. Elsa Schiaparelli (who was a customer of Avoca in the 1930s), another designer famous for her individuality, is a revered figure.
Pratt’s ability to combine different colours outlet paul smith bags, textures and patterns in a wayward, artistic way marks out her style as very much her own whether on a box, a cup or in a fashion garment.
“It’s to do with knowing when something is too much or knowing when it’s too little, it has to do with balance,” she says, sitting on the floor in her office, knee-deep in clothing samples.
“I always start with fabrics because that is my great love,” she says, admitting that she haunts the VA in London several times a year.
“I was always in love with beautiful old clothes that have some resonance. I don’t like throwing things away. I love the history in fabrics.” Her creative responsibilities don’t just end with the fashion collections she designs every year – spring 2013 is already out of the way and winter 2013 in progress – but includes everything from scarves to homewares, samples of which crowd the shelves in her office. Ninety per cent of what Avoca produces in these areas is exported, mainly to northern Europe but also further afield; the company has just received a €56,000 order for socks, for instance, from Anthropologie in the US and there is growing interest from Japan.
“The countries whose fashion really excites me are the UK and Japan,” she says.
Her scrapbooks in which she gathers ideas, images and fabrics for each season are a key to her design approach.
“I work on it at night at home, sitting in front of the fire when I have mental space. And I am completely paranoid about it. If I can’t in the book, I can’t do it in reality.” The winter collection shown here, would have started on these pages.
I comment on the buttons, always a noticeable feature, the latest made from old watches. “Most people think of a button as something that just does something up – it is usually the last thing a designer thinks of, whereas I think of it like a piece of jewellery that adds something happy and unexpected. Buttons were special to our ancestors and were often a mark of position. I see them as surprising details.”
That element of humour and surprise has endeared her to the Japanese market and Japanese magazines sit on a rack alongside French Vogue and others. “I love the Japanese aesthetic and their lack of fear of being different, particularly Japanese women. They like naivety rather than sexuality. We have been exporting there for the past four seasons, which means that at retail, Japan is selling €1.3 million worth of Avoca product.”
Now the giant Itochu Corporation, one of the world’s biggest, which brought Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Jil Sander amongst others to Japan, wants to open an Avoca retail shop in the country. Pratt is heading there next month – she is already taking lessons in Japanese – and if successful, the venture will mark a major development for the Irish company which has seen a big jump in exports since September 2009 as well as a 64 per cent increase in online business in the last six months.
Here in Ireland, however, most people associate Avoca with its café and shops, the newest of which has just opened in Malahide Castle in north Dublin. “Because of this, we are not really seen as an export business,” says Pratt. “I can’t think of any others in Ireland doing what I am doing and exporting. We are not seen in Ireland as being a design-driven house and the area that I am passionate about is design. There is so much innovation going on here and to think that another nation like Japan paul smith handbags sale, whose people are so different, would think that Avoca would be exciting, would be a dream.&rdquo outlet paul smith holdall;

Paul Smith Tianjin (Image: Fashion Trend Digest)
Kicking off its second crack at the China market, following a well-publicized withdrawal five years ago, leading British label Paul Smith recently unveiled its first new location in Tianjin. Having — in some analysts’ eyes — jumped the gun by entering China before consumers had warmed to more low-key labels, Paul Smith is optimistic that the emerging brand-savvy Chinese shopper will mean its prospects in 2013 are far better than they were in 2006.
Spearheaded by the new Tianjin location, Paul Smith’s renewed China push will be both old-school and cutting-edge, with the brand expanding its brick-and-mortar presence while jumping into domestic Chinese social media platforms. Hoping to open around 20 locations nationwide over the next five years, Paul Smith is preparing to open its very first mainland China flagship, a 5,000 square foot (465 square meter) “megastore” in Shanghai by the end of this year.
Located in the Lotte Department Store at Tianjin’s Milky Way International Shopping Center, Tianjin’s Paul Smith boutique wouldn’t look entirely out-of-place in London, with a nicely outfitted interior featuring pale yellow limestone floors and antique furniture. Using the same store-in-store effect seen at Paul Smith locations at Heathrow Terminal 5 and on Greene Street in New York, the Tianjin boutique is divided into four discrete sections: menswear, footwear, jewelry, and womenswear. Each section features its own British flavor, with the menswear section outfitted in traditional hand-carved oak paneling, a pair of 19th century oak tables and two antique chairs upholstered with Maharam fabric personally designed by Sir Paul Smith. With oak flooring in a unique zigzag pattern, a light pink striped backdrop, a central antique dolphin-base table buy Paul Smith Handbags, and a coral chandelier, the womenswear section is the yin to the menswear area’s yang.

As Jing Daily noted in August, Paul Smith is optimistic that changing demand in the country &mdash paul smith handbags sale; led by shoppers with an eye on quality and style rather than logos and flash — will help it capture more of the country’s still-booming high fashion segment despite consumer slowdown fears. By 2020, the mainland China fashion market is expected to triple in size to more than 1.3 trillion yuan (US$206 billion), up from 400 billion yuan in 2010. As Balbina Wong, chief executive officer for ImagineX Group (Paul Smith&rsquo paul smith holldall bags sale;s distributor in the Greater China region), put it this summer, “This is the right time to join the race…Chinese consumers are becoming more sophisticated and brand-conscious. China’s overall GDP may slow, but the middle-class is growing.”
As Sir Paul Smith told the FT, “There is a lot more awareness of Paul Smith [in China] now than there used to be…There are a lot of people who are not necessarily looking for the obvious symbols of wealth or fashion. They are more looking to buy things that they know are interesting, or special.”
